As mother’s cries broke the night, her children lay awake
Restless in sheets of straw- our beds made long ago
Littered with dust and clay, marked by blood and stone

His bitter tonic healed wounded ails- visions of the creator
Reigning hills and taming backs of the man-eaters
Forward to the metallic city, he set on his quest
With feet 2000 strong, we marched in his steps

A rain of arrows befell civil head, unheeding the call
Their shrieks of “Santiago,” hit the battle walls
Green boots cornered tents, with only our women left
From the pit we watched the godly men take their final bread

Upon dawn and quarry short, the land fell to a silhouette
Though empty-handed, the soldiers fixed the garrote
From both sides of the river, all pride collapsed
As the city turned crimson— Our people fell to ash
